March 22, 2024, marks a significant milestone as Rochester’s own Applied Image, Inc. celebrates its 45th anniversary.

Founded by visionary entrepreneur Bruno Glavich, the company has journeyed from a pioneering start-up to becoming a cornerstone in the imaging technology sector. This special anniversary provides a moment to reflect on the company’s history, achievements, and future under the leadership of Glenn Jackling, who took the helm in 2022.

Mr. Glavich’s journey into imaging began at a young age, fueled by a passion for photography and a robust science and math background. His career took a pivotal turn during his college years at RIT, leading to a foundational role in what would become Applied Image. Working through college for PSC in Webster, Glavich harnessed his expertise to start a subsidiary that laid the groundwork for his future business endeavors.

Bruno Glavich, founder of Applied Image

Glavich described the early days with the challenges of building a customer base, and the strategic acquisitions that propelled the company’s growth. His vision was clear: to focus on innovative imaging products that would help redefine the industry standard.

The most notable of his early innovations was the film encoder. This revolutionary technology drastically reduced the cost and improved the efficiency of inkjet printers and set a new benchmark for the imaging technology sector. This invention marked the beginning of an extraordinary period of growth for Applied Image, solidifying its position as a leader in the field.

Under Glavich’s stewardship, Applied Image pioneered the development of calibration standards for the barcode industry. The company became the sole manufacturer of NIST traceable barcode standards, a testament to its expertise and commitment to quality. Bruno’s philosophy of sticking to core competencies and understanding the marketplace has been a guiding principle and a driving force for the company’s success.

As Glavich looked to retire, he found in Glenn Jackling a capable successor with a perfect blend of engineering science and business acumen. He’s been impressed with Mr. Jackling’s results.

Glenn’s focus on modernizing the company’s technology and processes and a people-centered approach to management has improved productivity and product accuracy. Under his leadership, Applied Image is poised for continued success in the 21st century.
Reflecting on the company’s journey and the industry’s future, Glavich is optimistic about the transformative potential of imaging technology, from the next evolution of mobile devices to fuel cell technology.
